Venetian Plaster
Venetian plaster, also known as polished plaster, is a decorative wall finishing technique that originated in ancient Rome and gained prominence during the Italian Renaissance. It involves applying multiple layers of a specialised plaster mixture to walls or ceilings, which are then burnished or polished to create a smooth, marble-like finish with a unique depth and texture.
D&P specialise in traditional venetian plastering, this is the classic technique that originated in Venice. It involves using a mixture of slaked lime and marble dust to create a smooth and polished surface. It’s known for its high sheen and marble-like appearance.
The process of applying Venetian plaster typically includes these steps:
- Surface Preparation: The surface to be plastered is cleaned, smoothed, and sometimes primed to ensure proper adhesion.
- Base Coat Application: A base coat of plaster, usually made from a mixture of slaked lime, marble dust, and other natural minerals, is applied using a trowel. This coat provides a foundation for subsequent layers.
- Multiple Layers: Additional layers of plaster are applied, each being thinner than the previous one. These layers may vary in colour and texture, depending on the desired final appearance.
- Burnishing: Once the plaster has partially dried, it is polished with a special trowel, stone, or other burnishing tools. This process compresses and smooths the surface, creating a glossy, reflective finish.
- Colour and Sealing: Pigments or colorants can be added to the plaster layers to achieve a desired hue. After burnishing, a clear protective sealer is often applied to enhance the durability and sheen of the finish.
Venetian plaster offers a luxurious and timeless aesthetic that resembles the look of natural stone or marble. It creates a sense of depth and movement on the surface, with subtle variations in colour and texture that catch the light in different ways. The resulting effect can range from a soft, matte appearance to a high-gloss shine, depending on the level of burnishing and finishing techniques used.
Due to its artisanal nature and the skill required for its application, Venetian plaster is often considered a high-end decorative technique, adding a touch of sophistication and elegance to both traditional and contemporary interiors. It has become popular in upscale homes, luxury hotels, restaurants, and other upscale spaces where aesthetics play a significant role.
